Preity Zinta not an 'item girl' in my film: Director

She is making a special appearance in a song in his directorial debut Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna, but filmmaker Prem R. Soni says it will be "derogatory to call Preity Zinta an item girl".

Preity Zinta's dance in Main Aur Mrs Khanna

"I have nothing against item girls or item songs. After all, they have time and again managed to spice up the proceedings in so many films. However, in the context of Main Aurr Mrs Khanna, it would be really derogatory to call Preity Zinta an item girl," Soni said.

The actress features in the song, Happening.

The 34-year-old director always wanted Preity in his first film even though he got a dream pair in Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor.

"While I had signed other actors for the film, I always wanted Preity to be a part of it. Actually, I didn't even think about any other options and was dead sure that Preity had to be cast. I told her the same and was adamant that she had to be in it," said Soni.

Preeti plays Haseen Jagmagiya in the film and, thankfully for Soni, she said 'yes' without much ado.

Salman & Kareena in Main Aur Mrs Khanna

"Of course, she did have her initial reservations since she hadn't played a part like this before. But then she also said, 'What the heck, let me do it'. She laughed and agreed to be there.

Preity's presence enhances the entertainment quotient of the film, says Soni.

"But then she is not randomly walking in and walking out of the frames. As Haseena Jagmagiya, she is quite funny and comes at the point in the film when Salman and Kareena are on the verge of making or breaking their relationship as a married couple."

How about the other angle in the film, Sohail Khan? Does he bring in an extramarital angle?

"This question has been asked so many times and I am glad that good curiosity is being built around the film, courtesy a smart promotional campaign. However, let me tell you that the film doesn't have an extramarital relationship or cheating angle.

"It just tells the story from the point of view of an outsider. Sohail is someone who looks at Mrs. Khanna (Kareena) and sees the kind of issues that she is facing.

Also starring Yash Tonk in an important role, the film is a co-production of Ronnie Screwala and Sohail. It is releasing on the same day as Blue and All The Best.

Salman, Kareena romance on 125th floor of a hotel!

Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor romanced on the 125th floor of a hotel in Melbourne for their forthcoming romantic movie Main Aurr Mrs Khanna.

"Usually the Australian government doesn't allow such film shootings to take place in the Realto hote. But when they found out that it was none other than Salman and Kareena who were going to shoot there, they readily agreed," said a source.

"The view from the 125th floor was breathtaking and overlooked nearly the whole of Melbourne. Most of the romantic scenes between Salman and Kareena have been shot here since the location was important to the scene," added the source.

Releasing October 16, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna is directed by first-time director Prem Soni.

I didn't refuse Farah Khan's offer: Asin

Southern beauty Asin Thottumkal has slammed rumours suggesting that she refused a role in Farah Khan's next directorial venture, Happy New Year, saying she can never say no to the choreographer-turned-director.

"I am extremely upset with this rumour that has obviously been floated by vested interests. I don't understand how such rumours crop up.

"Farah Khan is a close friend of mine there is no way I can refuse her. There was never any discussion over the movie. This news is utter rubbish," Asin clarified in a statement.

Farah, who has earlier made blockbuster films like Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om, supported Asin and said: "The rumour is a complete fabrication. I have not even written the script as yet."

Asin will next be seen in her forthcoming release Vipul Shah's London Dreams, also starring Ajay Devgan and Salman Khan.

I'll do important roles till 80 like Ashok Kumar: Amitabh

Amitabh Bachchan has never been busier. The Bollywood megastar, who turns 67 Sunday, has three films lined up for release, is hosting a popular television reality show, is to walk the ramp for a top fashion event - and has no plans to retire in the near future.

He says he'll be happy to follow in the footsteps of legendary actor Ashok Kumar, who played strong roles even at the age of 80.

"I would disagree that actors of my age don't get important roles to play in movies. Look at Dada Muni (Ashok Kumar)...he was an example. He kept doing important roles even till he was 80 years old," said Amitabh.

"I can't be playing the lover boy anymore. So I do all those roles that suit a 67-year-old," said the film icon who has completed four decades in the Indian film industry.

At his age, Amitabh is one of the busiest actors in tinsel town. The megastar says he had finished shooting for his forthcoming films Aladin, Teen Patti and Paa before heading to Singapore for three months.

He is now preparing to sign more projects. "I was away with a friend of mine (Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh) who had a medical condition and I was out of the country for three months. Since I knew I wanted to be with him and that it would take some period of time for him to heal, I deliberately finished all my pending work by June," Amitabh said.

In all his forthcoming projects, Amitabh will be seen in different avatars.

In Aladin, he will sport overgrown locks for the role of a contemporary genie, Paa will see him playing a child suffering from progeria, which causes premature ageing, and Teen Patti features him as a mathematics genius.

While Aladin will hit screens October 30, Paa will release December 4 and Teen Patti, which also stars Hollywood legend Ben Kingsley, will open to audiences February 12 next year.

Till then, Amitabh is making his presence felt on the small screen after three years as the host of Colors' reality show Bigg Boss, which has celebrities staying inside a specially designed house under constant camera surveillance and no contact with the outside world.

"Bigg Boss was the first thing I took up (after returning from Singapore). There are many people who want to make a film with me fortunately, so I will now talk to them," he said.

The actor is also fairing well in the ad world as he emerged among the top five Indian celebrity brand endorsers in a recently conducted survey.

And he is also set to scorch the fashion runway at the HDIL India Couture Week on his birthday. He will display a creation by his favourite designer duo Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla.

Rakhi Sawant's mom Jaya evicted from Bigg Boss

Item girl Rakhi Sawant's mother Jaya Friday became the first to be evicted from the Bigg Boss house. And her exit from the reality show was as dramatic as her entry.

When Jaya's name was announced as the evicted participant of this week, she shed silent tears and seemed extremely disappointed. She nevertheless hugged some of the contestants and even blessed comedian Raju Srivastav when he touched her feet.

Jaya had shocked all and sundry when she was welcomed by host, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, as one of the 13 contestants of the show Sunday.

Apart from being the most unexpected participant, she also revealed her motive of going into the show - making peace with her daughter Rakhi. But alas, she didn't get much time in the Bigg Boss house.

Her age and non-celebrity background became a major drawback for her in the five days that she was on the show. While she was the oldest participant, Jaya was also laughed at for her lifestyle and her failed attempts at singing and dancing.

On more than one occasion, she was also seen praying to Jesus to help her get Rakhi back. But none of it convinced her co-participants Shamita Shetty, Vindu Dara Singh, Raju Srivastav, Tanaaz Currim, Claudia Ciesla, Aditi Gowitrikar, Bhaktiyaar Irani and Rohit Verma from nominating her for eviction.

They felt she was "out of place", "less lively" and "uncomfortable" in the presence of a much younger crowd.

The final decision, however, depended on viewer's votes.

Before leaving, Jaya was asked to nominate one person who she felt spent most of the time in dressing up each day. And she chose fashion designer Rohit Verma. As a result, he will now have to dress up simply for the next week.

Bigg Boss 3, the third season of the Indian version of popular international show Big Brother, has various celebrity participants locked inside a specially designed house for 84 days. They give up a life of luxury to be under 24X7 camera surveillance for the show.

I play bold role in Karthik Calling Karthik: Deepika

Model-turned-actress Deepika Padukone has revealed that she plays a "bold" character in Farhan Akhtar's forthcoming production Karthik Calling Karthik.

"Karthik Calling Karthik is a romantic thriller and my role is quite bold and optimistic in the film as opposite to Farhan's which is a very pessimistic one," said Deepika.

Directed by Vijay Lalwani, the film is about a man who gets phone calls from himself. It is co-produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under their banner Excel Entertainment and Amit Chandra and Vijay Lalwani of Magic Beans.

The 23-year-old actress was in the capital to launch two new soap variants of Fiama Di Wills, which is also the associate sponsor of the upcoming Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WLIFW).

Deepika, the brand ambassador of Fiama Di Wills, also unveiled designer Sumeet Varma's preview collection for WLIFW titled 'The Life of a Swan-Swan lake'.

Asked if she preferred Indian or western wear, she said: "Personally I like Indian dresses, but I am ok with western outfits as well. While choosing a dress what I see is whether I am comfortable in it or not."

Once a state-level badminton player, the actress is also game for promoting other sports. "I played badminton with Aamir Khan for a cause. (And) I will try the same way if I can promote other games like athletics and basketball too along with badminton," said Deepika, who was last seen in romantic drama Love Aaj Kal.

Asked about her Diwali plans, she said: "I will be with my family."

Ajay Devgn's All The Best in copyright controversy

Next week's big Diwali release, All The Best, finds itself in the middle of an uncalled for controversy. Producer Karan Ramsay (of Om Films Company) has reportedly filed a copyright infringement suit against actor and producer Ajay Devgn over the script of the film.

Ramsay claims that the script of All The Best is almost the same as his under-production film called Uncle Samjha Karo. He has even gone on to mention that he had purchased the copyright of his film's script from writer Paritosh Painter in November 2006. Ramsay further adds that in 2007, Paritosh Painter had tried to get back the copyright of the script from him but in the arbitration process that followed, the IMPPA ruled the case in his favour thereby declaring Ramsay as the owner of the copyright.

Devgn films meanwhile claim that their film is based on the American play Right Bed, Wrong Husband and that they had in fact acquired the script from an American firm for $40,000. Devgn is even livid at the fact that despite knowing all this long before, Ramsay files a petition at the last minute close to his film's release.

"Right now we are in Delhi for the promotions of our film. The matter is currently in court and we would not like to comment on anything at this point of time," said a spokesperson from Devgn Films.

Not doing Raavan an amicable decision: Bipasha

Bipasha Basu, who now looks forward to multi-starrer comedy All The Best, has dismissed rumours that her role in Mani Ratnam's Raavan was cancelled because her character posed a threat to the other actresses - Aishwarya Rai and Priyamani. She insists it was an amicable decision between her and the director.

Rumour mills were abuzz that Bipasha's role of Mandodari opposite Abhishek Bachchan in the film was suspended because her part was overpowering as compared to the other female stars.

"They were all rumours and only rumours. I am not a part of Raavan. I was initially a part of Raavan but Mani sir thought he couldn't do justice to my role, as to whatever he had promised me would definitely be in conflict with the actual story of the film once it is shot," Bipasha said.

"So he took a call instead of being in an embarrassing position later on. He decided to tell me that and amicably we decided that it should not be done, hopefully we'll work together soon. So now there's going to be no Mandodari in the film," she added.

The film also stars Nikhil Dwivedi and Tamil actor Vikram.

Bipasha was in the capital to promote her forthcoming release All The Best - Fun Begins that is releasing Friday.

Distributed by Yash Raj Films, the laughathon has been directed by Rohit Shetty. Apart from Bipasha, it also stars Fardeen Khan, Mugdha Godse, Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn, who has produced the comedy.

" All The Best is a situational comedy and a total entertainer. It deals with a lot of mistaken identities, people lying and getting into trouble," Bipasha said. "My character is called Jahnvi who is married to Ajay in the film. She is a straightforward girl who is trying to run her life and family by looking after a totally rundown gym. She cons people to join the gym by lying because by the looks of it, nobody wants to join it," she added.

Apparently this is the 30-year-old's sixth movie with Ajay after Zameen, Apaharan, Shikhar and Omkara.

"We also did a film together with Sanjay Dutt that was completed 50 per cent, Mr.Fraud (shelved)," she said.

Asked how her co-star was as a producer, she said: "He is a very good producer. He gifted me a Blackberry apart from giving me the money for the film. What's important is that at the end of the day he is a very good friend and a very good co-star.

"I've known Ajay for quite some time now. He is very entertaining and makes you laugh and he's a fabulous actor."

Salman Khan and Salim Khan were most wanted for Boney Kapoor

Mumbai: Before the release of his upcoming flick "Wanted", producer of the flick Boney Kapoor was shedding tears. He was going through a rough financial conditions, he didn't have enough to make his movie. He was continuously looking for some financial help to make the flick.

Here the lead actor of his flick Wanted, Salman Khan did a kind favour to his producer by charging him just 7- Crores for the movie instead of his usual charges 25- Crore. On such a good favour from kind hearted Salman Khan, Boney didn't ask for any other favour from him.

Mr. Producer of flick "Wanted" has always had good terms with entire family of Salim Khan. This is not just the end of deep relations with Kapoor and Khan families, Boney's son Arjun Kapoor has dated Salim Khan's youngest daughter Arpita Khan once and both are still good friends.

As the sources have revealed, Boney Kapoor asked for the help of around 1- Crore for his flick and for this Salim Khan replied, "Look, I'm not here to help in the capacity of the hero's father. And, I can only offer you Rs one Crore because that is the only amount I have immediate access to. So if you need it, I can make out a personal cheque to you from my side."

.....when Katrina took Salman for granted!

Mumbai: Well, the spectacular actor of Bollywood Salman Khan has been loved by all has already been ditched twice in his love life. Once by Aishwarya Rai and other was an unknown celebrity who broke his heart.

After all these issues Salman found his beautiful soulmate Katrina Kaif. The relation between the two actors has gotten so famous that everyone knows about it.

But now, may be because of Salman's temperamental nature Katrina might have started to find herself in uncomfortable position.

We can evidently say that Lady Katrina has admitted that she and her co-star in Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani and Rajniti charming actor Ranbir Kapoor make a good-looking couple on-screen.

Speaking to a leading daily she admitted: "Ranbir and I make a nice-looking couple so the reactions from the industry have been positive. He is a name who equals my fascination and my vigor on the set.”

Well, which way is Salman's love life gonna go only time will tell.

In the mean time we can only wish for his better future with Katrina for a lifetime.

Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor are again going to work together

Mumbai: As the fans of glam girl Kareena Kapoor knows very well that she was with Shahid Kapoor for a long time but now they have really moved to their ways of career and personal lives because it seems that the old lovers have becomes enemies.

This is very latest that Shahid and Kareena refused to romance for upcoming two new songs. After a grand success of his very previous movie "Wanted" producer Boney Kapoor wants to give a new start to his much-delayed film "Milenge Milenge". This movie was almost dumped for last five years.

To add some spices in the flick, music director Himesh Reshammiya has recorded two songs. But sadly, Shahid and Kareena are not willing to get closer after a long time of their break up.

Sources have also revealed that Kareena is not going to shoot for these extra songs. This has made Satish Kaushik unfortunate to use the footage of the two songs, which now would be used as promotional videos for the flick, also the duo are not going to promote this flick together.

I've played an angry young woman in Pankh: Bipasha Basu

Mumbai: Well, the Bengali Bombshell Bipasha Basu is a real gem of an actor. To be precise, she's one of those actors who have put their significant marks in Bollywood. But she still is not satisfied with her kind of roles that she has done.

May be that's the reason why she is trying to get herself out of her so called 'Sexy' image that she is usually seen in.

Talking about her role in her much talked movie Pankh she says, "The character that I am portraying in Pankh is called Nandini. She is as weird as girl from a village can ever be. It's an angry young woman kind of a character"

There is no set guideline and its completely odd for a girl to portray this kind of a role.

Bipasha, who started her Bollywood career with bold characters in 'Jism' and 'Raaz' feels that she would like to be known for her acting skills rather than her babe kind of an image.

Though, just a few days back she was found saying that considers herself the Bikini Queen.

Big B gets a blast from the past in ‘Aladin’

Filmmaker Sujoy Ghosh is such a huge fan of Amitabh Bachchan that he revisited many of the megastar’s hit films, studied key scenes and dialogues and came up with his own take by presenting them in his forthcoming fantasy adventure “Aladin”.

As a tribute, he wanted audiences to get a sneak peak into Amitabh’s past movies and incorporated those elements into the character of Genius - The Genie that would instantly find a connect with the audiences.

“As a fan of his work, you also want him to do something that you know would keep millions of his fans and followers worldwide happy. It’s a good mix and I really had fun putting it all together. As for the inspiration factor, it’s for the audiences to see once the film hits the screens. I would be keen to see how they catch on and then react to it,” Ghosh told IANS.

Amitabh was Ghosh’s only choice when he conceptualised the character of Genius - The Genie for “Aladin”. It is a known fact that Genie is set in contemporary times and the character is flashy, vibrant and not many were aware that Ghosh has extended his real life tribute to the actor on reel as well.

“When you have someone like Mr. Bachchan working with you, you naturally become a lot greedy. You want to talk to him about his work over the years, the way he approached his character and then also try to present him with a characterisation that he has never been seen in before,” he said.

The director was always intrigued by the way the megastar has continued to re-invent himself over all these years.

No wonder one can already see Amitabh shaking a leg a la “Pag Ghunghroo Bandh” in “O re Saawariya” with his pink ‘pagdi’ and trademark white ‘kurta’ intact. His song “Tak dhina dhin” too has a “Jahan Teri Yeh Nazar Hai” flavour to it.

Moreover, there are also certain scenes in the film that are inspired by the Big B’s old movies.

A co-production of Sunil Lulla from Eros International and Sujoy Ghosh’s Boundscript, “Aladin” also stars Sanjay Dutt as Ringmaster, Riteish Deshmukh in the title role and debutant Jacqueline Fernandes as Jasmine.

Bollywood takes liberty with Sufi music: Hans Raj Hans

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) In the fields of Punjab where he grew up, farmers would sing Sufi songs - even his family sang. That is how popular singer Hans Raj Hans learnt his music. Today, he believes, Bollywood takes liberty with the genre.

“The words and the essence of the ‘kalams’ (works) cannot change, only the orchestra can change. It is a good thing that Sufism and its music are reaching out to the masses, but the music should not detract from tradition. The exponents cannot play around with the compositions of the great saints,” Hans Raj told IANS in an informal chat.

The musician, who has performed with Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, feels, “Bollywood has been taking liberty with Sufi music”.

Hans Raj nurtures a dream - he wants to build an ashram for Sufi music so that the centuries-old genre can be passed on to future generations.

“I want to build an ashram of Sufi music for children. But someone has to set it up for me,” said the noted Sufi musician, who performed at the Delhi International Arts Festival Saturday.

“The road to Sufiana is tough,” Hans Raj says. “Most contemporary musicians want to become stars overnight. It is not possible to achieve instant fame in Sufi music - it takes time to become famous,” the musician said.

Walking down memory lane, Hans Raj says: “I was born in Shafipur, a village near Jallandhar which is home to the dargah of Sufi saint Shafi Mohammed.

“Every year, the shrine hosts a ‘Sufi darvesh’ (live congregation of Sufi saints) that is attended by minstrels from across the country and Pakistan. My village is steeped in Sufi music.

“I was very young, around five or six, when I first heard farmers sing Sufi folk songs in groups while working in their fields. Even my family sang. I followed them around and learned the songs,” said Hans Raj, who grew up in a family of farmers.

He has also been conferred the Padma Shri for his contribution to music. “I have been singing for more than 20 years,” the musician said.

Hans Raj, who spreads the message of “peace and amity” through his music, is known for his “live border concerts”.

“Every year, on the midnight of Aug 14, I visit the Pakistan border and perform at a candle light concert to reach out to the people of Pakistan. Over the years, it has become an important event on Punjab’s Independence Day calendar,” he said.

“This year too, I went to the border and sang in the presence of politicians, performers, journalists and intellectuals, including Salima Hashmi, the daughter of Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz. My border concerts have also been attended by (writer-poet) Gulzar and (actor) Raj Babbar,” he said.

Hans Raj, who is passing on his legacy of Sufi and folk music to his two sons, likes to sing “in places where my music is appreciated”.

“People who love Sufi music are always drawn to my concerts. They are blessed,” he said.

The musician has cut several Indipop albums.

“This year, I released an album of Baba Farid’s kalams set to music by Jagjit Singh. I try to bring a classical touch to Sufi folk,” Hans Raj said.

Distinguishing between “Punjabi, Rajasthani and Kashmiri Sufi music”, he said, “Sufi folk from Punjab is very similar to that of Rajasthan in language. They are a blend of Urdu, Hindi and the local language.

“The Sufi songs from Kashmir are mostly in Urdu and the Kashmiri language. But the philosophy is one - to reach god through music,” he said.

The musician is currently working on an album of Punjabi folk songs.

Salman Rescues Kareena

So far we’ve only heard horror stories of Salman’s misbehaviour with his leading and misleading ladies.

But Kareena Kapoor has a different story to tell.

Says Kareena, “Salman has always been very protective. He has been there for me whenever I needed him. That’s partly to do with the fact that my sister Karisma is very close friends with Salman and also his favourite co-star.”

Every time Kareena shoots with Salman she feels super-protected and safe. Just how caring a co-star this Khan can be was proven to Kareena recent when they were shooting a romantic song on the Phi Phi Beach in Thailand for his home production Main Aurr Mrs Khanna.

This was the same location where Danny Boyle had shot The Beach with Leonardo Di Caprio.

The beach, as anyone who’s been there, is no sandy but pebbled.

And Kareena had to go bare feet into the water with Salman. But before she could reach even half -way she cut her foot in a sharp pebble rather badly.

Says a source, “Kareena doubled up in pain and almost fell to the ground. Salman reflexively reached for her and swooped her into his arms. And he carried her to the water.”

The shot has been retained in the film, although it was never meant to be part of the film.

Says the director Prem Soni, “Throughout the shooting, you could see the special bonding that they had. But that day on the Phi Phi Island it got really special. We came much further into the land from the sea than we imagined .When it was time to go back we realized we had to walk through the pebbled beach and wade into almost head-deep water before reaching our boat. We had to do it. Otherwise we’d have to spend the night on the beach without food or water. Kareena was in this long gown and barefoot. She was in pain. Before we knew it he swooped her into his arms and carried her into a boat. It was a very romantic-looking moment and we couldn’t let it go.”

I HAVE MOVED ON FROM MY RELATIONSHIP WITH SAIF

ROZA CATALANO tells JYOTHI VENKATESH that she would slap if a person asks her to sleep with him in exchange for a role

Is it true that you are keen on learning the oldest form of martial arts in China shortly?

Yes. I am fit and I want to become fitter as days are passing by. As a kick-boxing freak for the past 4 years and a trained martial arts person, I am now gung ho about trying my hands in the oldest and the best form of martial arts- Wushu Kung-Fu from Anan Henan in China.

How do you feel when complimented with epithets like sexy, hot etc?

Though these epithets are compliments used by men with a sexy connotation. I confess that I am used to passes from men, especially in India. If men do not make a pass at you, who will? But I do not give any man the vibe.

Did you come all the way to India from Africa, just because you fell in love with Saif?

Contrary to the notion that I had an ulterior motive and wanted to pursue my career in Bollywood by latching out to Saif, though I used to do theatre in Switzerland and also walk the ramp, I came to India just in pursuit of my heart, because love for Saif dictated every move of mine. For three years of my life, I did not do anything and just took the back seat by stepping behind Saif.

Is it true that you did two ads as well as anchored a talk show when you were with Saif?

I did two ads with Saif just for a lark when the producers of the ad requested me to be a part of the ad campaign. I also shot for two episodes of a show for Star as an anchor, but the channel decided not to shoot further episodes of the show. It was around the same time that Saif and I split and I was quite crest-fallen and had to get over her trauma and fend for myself. I have always believed that if one door closes, yet another will open for you.

How did get over the trauma?

I felt wounded but at the same time, I realized that it was important for me to understand what is going on around me and stand for what I believe. In the difficult period that ensued, sat back, felt the pain and started re-discovering myself, by setting out to learn more about myself which I did not know at all earlier. Though it took some time, it was not difficult for me to get back on my feet. I think it is because of the way I approach people and life in general. It is my persona. I used to walk in areas which were dangerous. If you have an attitude, where you respect others, others in turn will also respect you.

Have you lost the belief in love?

Just because I had a failed relationship; it does not mean that I have lost my belief in love. I have big respect for love and for myself too. However, I have realized one thing for sure. That is I cannot indulge in something in which I can give 100 percent of myself. At the risk of sounding to be very selfish, I need to give love to myself first. I believe that everything will come at the right time.

What did you learn from your relationship with Saif?

I do not like to talk about my relationship with Saif because I have moved on and that is a closed chapter in my life. You learn from a relationship and move ahead if it does not work for some reason or the other. You should not start hating love, but protect it, because love is what makes living worthwhile. I also do not believe in blaming any one or pointing out fingers. I do not think any woman can take something away from you if you are not giving. I do not like to play the victim.

What is your take on the syndrome of the casting couch in the film industry?

I am of the opinion that every individual has to know what he or she is. I have heard a lot about the syndrome of the casting couch in film industry. I do not believe in barter system. I”d perhaps slap if some one were to ask me to sleep with him in exchange for a role. I like having my own space. I guess, if you know you are capable, then you know your talent and will have your own self esteem.

Do you feel handicapped as an actor, because of your white skin?

I do not want to get typed as yet another item girl in Bollywood, just because I have white skin. I do not want to be slotted as a foreign bimbette. The reason I did only item numbers mostly is that the roles which I was offered till now were not substantial at all. Music makes me feel closer to God. I am sure after people watch me in films like Nakshatra, Monopoly, Ek Second Jo Zindagi Badal De etc, I will be approached for roles which are written keeping me and my talent in mind. For the last two years, I have been brushing my knowledge of Hindi. Now that I am in India, I am not going to give up easily till I make it in Bollywood, like Katrina Kaif. Kat is amazing. Success stories of women like Kat inspire me, but I am here not to compete with Kat or any other actress but with myself. Kat has proved that movies do not have borders.

Asin rejects Farah Khan’s offer because of SRK?

Asin had a wonderful start with Bollywood as she bagged films with two Khans - Aamir and Salman. She was very vocal that she wanted to work with the third powerful Khan - Shah Rukh. However, when she had the chance to work with SRK, she turned it down.

A few days ago, Farah Khan offered her a role in her next, Happy New Year, which stars Shah Rukh Khan. Asin took her time to think over the offer, consulted her father and then sent word to Farah that she won’t be doing the film.

A close hand reveals, “Ever since Asin appeared on Farah’s show Tere Mere Beach Mein, they have been in touch. When Farah offered her the role, initially Asin was quite excited. It is not known why she refused Farah’s film.”

The close hand further added, “She conveyed that the dates which Farah needed would be clashing with her other assignments.”

It is believed that Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone have set their eyes on the female lead in Happy New Year. Kareena Kapoor is also being considered.

Rakhi Sawant’s mom Jaya evicted from ‘Bigg Boss’

Item girl Rakhi Sawant’s mother Jaya Friday became the first to be evicted from the “Bigg Boss” house. And her exit from the reality show was as dramatic as her entry.

When Jaya’s name was announced as the evicted participant of this week, she shed silent tears and seemed extremely disappointed.

But alas, she didn’t get much time in the “Bigg Boss” house.

They felt she was “out of place”, “less lively” and “uncomfortable” in the presence of a much younger crowd.

The final decision, however, depended on viewer’s votes.

Before leaving, Jaya was asked to nominate one person who she felt spent most of the time in dressing up each day. And she chose fashion designer Rohit Verma. As a result, he will now have to dress up simply for the next week.

“Bigg Boss 3″, the third season of the Indian version of popular international show “Big Brother”, has various celebrity participants locked inside a specially designed house for 84 days. They give up a life of luxury to be under 24X7 camera surveillance for the show.

When Neil Nitin Mukesh was reduced to tears!

Last night, Neil Nitin Mukesh was almost reduced to tears. Late last night, a biker at Marine Drive rammed into his precious Audi Q7. Neil, who used to vacuum and wash the car himself everyday, is depressed as the car is dented even though it was not his fault.

A gloomy Neil tells us, “I hadn’t taken my car out of our building’s compound since days as it is being renovated. I only took it out once on Thursday night, and this happens. When the biker saw me, he started shouting my name and moving in circles dangerously close to my car. I waved to him to ride safely. When he zoomed past me, I was thankful that it was the last of him. Minutes later, at the signal, I saw headlights headed for me at full speed. He not only damaged the front of my Audi completely, but also the Indica that was next to my car.”

“The biker wasn’t hurt much, but when I saw the car, my heart sank. I was full of rage, but managed to reach home without an ugly brawl. Bikers who do this put a lot of lives in danger. Besides, just because we are public figures does not mean that money is easy for us. I have dreamt of buying an expensive car and this was it. And then when a random guy come along and just bangs into my car it’s too much,” Neil adds.

Neil’s father, Nitin Mukesh says, “Thankfully, Neil is not hurt. He loves his car a lot. I’m not upset about the car, but abut the fact that Neil is in depression, worried abut the car.”

Bollywood glamour will add to India Couture Week

It will be a six-day star-studded extravaganza. The second edition of the HDIL India Couture Week will see top notch Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt and Saif Ali Khan walk the ramp for the fashion pageant that kicks off here Sunday.

The Oct 11-16 event will see superstar Amitabh Bachchan walking the ramp for designer duo Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla’s inaugural show. Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Govinda, Ajay Devgan and Katrina Kaif are expected to walk the ramp for Salman Khan’s Being Human show Oct 13.

Then, filmmaker Karan Johar is making his fashion debut at the event. The maker of super hits like “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham” has teamed up with designer Varun Bahl to showcase men’s couture range on the last day.

Since Karan Johar’s muse is Shah Rukh Khan, the Bollywood superstar will sashay down the ramp along with his wife Gauri Khan.

Bollywood’s young brigade Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan are also expected to walk the ramp.

The couture week is an initiative of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), which annually stages two editions of the hugely successful Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) in New Delhi.

Other designers participating in this event are Monisha Jaising, Pallavi Jaikishan, Varun Bahl, Manish Malhotra, Manav Gangavani and Suneet Varma.

Unlike WIFW, the couture week is not a business-driven event but more a celebration of the Indian cultural heritage in a grand manner. Hence emphasis is given more to ramp decoration and creating a grand ambience to give an extravagant touch to the event.

“This is not a buyer-oriented event. Here the emphasis will be more on individual clients rather than on large buyers. We expect individual clients to conduct one-on-ones with designers to place their orders,” FDCI president Sunil Sethi told IANS.

“Couture is all about extravagance and this gives an opportunity to the designers to add to their creativity by lending more drama and grandeur to the ramp,” he added.

Talking about the celebrity quotient, Sethi said: “This year, the glamour quotient is at the peak in the couture week. These couture czars will surprise you with their collections while Bollywood celebrities will mesmerise you on the ramp.

“Full entertainment is guaranteed here.”

Apart from the glam and glitz, the event will also be a testing time for Monisha Jaising to prove her skills as a couture designer as she is mainly known for her pret line.

However, Sethi is confident about her skill-set. He said: “She is one of the finest designers of the country and I am sure she will present a scintillating collection.”

I play bold role in ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’: Deepika

Model-turned-actress Deepika Padukone has revealed that she plays a “bold” character in Farhan Akhtar’s forthcoming production “Karthik Calling Karthik”.

“‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ is a romantic thriller and my role is quite bold and optimistic in the film as opposite to Farhan’s which is a very pessimistic one,” Deepika told reporters here Friday.

Deepika, the brand ambassador of Fiama Di Wills, also unveiled designer Sumeet Varma’s preview collection for WLIFW titled ‘The Life of a Swan-Swan lake’.

Asked if she preferred Indian or western wear, she said: “Personally I like Indian dresses, but I am ok with western outfits as well. While choosing a dress what I see is whether I am comfortable in it or not.”

Once a state-level badminton player, the actress is also game for promoting other sports.

“I played badminton with Aamir Khan for a cause. (And) I will try the same way if I can promote other games like athletics and basketball too along with badminton,” said Deepika, who was last seen in romantic drama “Love Aaj Kal”.

Asked about her Diwali plans, she said: “I will be with my family.”

Shame: Bad boy Shiney back to work in Bollywood

Here's yet another case of Bollywood camaraderie. Shiney Ahuja, accused in the infamous rape episode, is back in Bollywood soon after being released on bail.

His mentor Sudhir Mishra, who brought him fame with Hazaron Khwahishen Aisi, and subsequently Khoya Khoya Chand, has not only spoken to him after his release, buzz is that he is also planning to cast him in his next film Hitman.

In the past, actors such as Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan have been at crossroads with the law, but that did not impact their brand equity as stars.

Ahuja has been ordered by the Bombay High Court to relocate to Delhi until his trial begins. Sudhir is currently in Delhi, finishing a thriller. He will begin work on Hitman soon after this venture gets completed.

The two had discussed the film before the actor was arrested. The duo had also planned to work on Devdas but the project was eventually shelved.

Things you never knew: Asin's French Connection

Asin loves to travel and explore different places and know more about the people and culture. During the shoot of London Dreams in Paris, Asin would go sight seeing a lot. She would visit churches, attended the mass, have street food etc.

A friend of the actress said, “When Asin was shooting for London Dreams, she went sight seeing in Paris. Asin loved the churches in Paris. She even attended the mass. Asin even tried the street food available there. In short work cum pleasure trip for Asin.”

And not many know that Asin can not only read and write but also speak the French language fluently. She's quite a master at it.

A close friend of the actress revealed, “Asin can sing French songs very fluently. In fact her college friends would tease calling her French Nightingale. French was her favourite subject. She was top scorer in the subject.”

Now we know where Asin's love for Paris stems from? One wonders if she was a French actress in her past life.

High headed Bipasha backs out- Is TV for lesser stars?

At the last minute, Bipasha Basu has cancelled plans of performing at a television channel’s Diwali special show. She dropped out at the last minute because she didn’t want to be the only Bollywood star performing among the TV stars.

She was scheduled to be a part of the grand finale of Diwali Mela Dilon Ka along with Ajay Devgan and director Rohit Shetty to promote their film and Bipasha would be the only one performing.

But she then pulled out claiming that TV was only for stars who weren’t sure about their Bollywood career. The show will see TV stars like Shweta Gulati and Rajeev Khandelwal.

However, Bipasha denied ever having even heard of the show.

Bloody Nose: Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor hurt!

Here's a story that's quite nosey. Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif landed up hurting their noses in a scene. A unit source said, "It was an action sequence. Ranbir was fighting goons and while doing the shot he landed up hurting his nose. And in the same fighting sequence, he accidentally landed up hitting Katrina on her nose too."

But she never complained once. In fact she laughed it off saying, "Ranbir are you trying to save me from the goons or are you saving the goons from me." Everyone laughed on the set.

Ranbir Kapoor badly hurt his nose while shooting for a wedding sequence in Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani.

A unit member said, “The scene required Ranbir to hop and elope with Kats on his bike. He had to ride the bike in full speed and he has crash through the wooden house in the escaping process.

He successfully gave the shot but during the process, it was his nose that banged on the wooden sheet of the house.”

“When Ranbir was watching the shot on the monitor, Katrina noticed his bleeding nose. She gently applied ice and nursed him till the bleeding stopped completely. Ranbir was touched by Katrina's gesture, ” said our source.

Hrithik-Aishwarya 'Guzaarish' in Portuguese!

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Guzaarish’ which stars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai will have portions shot in Portuguese. And hence, Hrithik and Ash have already hired Portuguese language experts who will help them with the accent and dialect for their respective roles.

Why Portuguese? As per sources, the film is set in the Goan period when people used to speak the language. In fact, erected sets of the film shows “Portuguese architecture and style”, reveal sources.

Apparently Bhansali insisted on getting someone who understood the fashion history of Goa under the Portuguese, who rule the state for 450 years and zeroed in on Kolkata-based Sabyasachi Mukherjee who's currently working on many A- list projects like the Abhishek-Aishwarya Raavan and Amitabh-starrer Paa.

Bhansali has also asked Hrithik to put on weight for this movie -- and he already has gained some kilos. He'll sport long hair and also a beard like Goan people preferred."

Shazahn Padamsee kisses Rocket Singh Ranbir!

After Deepika, Bipasha and Minnisha Lamba, Shazahn Padamsee has locked lips with Ranbir Kapoor in his upcoming film Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year.

The kiss is part of a dream sequence and the only sizzling part in the movie, because the character of Rocket Singh doesn’t have a leading lady in the film, as per sources.

After shooting the kiss with Ranbir, Shazahn was quite animated and told her friends about it. "Shazahn and Ranbir have amazing chemistry in the film.

In fact, she even casually admitted on the sets how she has a crush on Ranbir. After the shoot got over, Shazahn was seen talking on the phone telling friends how she had kissed Ranbir."

Kareena refuses to romance Shahid Kapoor, again

The lie of so-called 'cool break up' between Shahid and Kareena was exposed when the duo refused to romance in two new songs for their much-delayed Boney Kapoor film Milenge Milenge.

Though Kareena refused to comment, a source close to her says, “Kareena is more than happy to extend all cooperation to producer Boney Kapoor and director Satish Kaushik, but she won’t shoot an extra songs for the film. Shahid is a closed chapter.”

This has made hapless Satish Kaushik to use the footage for the two songs, which would be used as promotional videos. It is also said that the actors would not promote for the film together.

A music video for the newly-recorded Himesh track was also planned as part of the film’s promotion. However, there would be no joint appearances by Shahid and Kareena.

Negative stories about Salman Khan are all cooked up: Asin

Asin Thottumkal was told horror stories about Salman Khan when she signed "London Dreams" opposite him. But all the misgivings were sorted out once she started shooting with him, Asin says and stresses that all negative stories about the superstar are "cooked up".

"Really, it was all so strange because even before reporting for the film's shoot, there was this particular notion being built in my mind around Salman.

"See, we all know about Aamir Khan being so disciplined. So once I signed 'London Dreams' with Salman, various kinds of stories started coming my way. People commented that 'Aah, you have worked with Aamir; now see what it is to be with Salman', " Asin told.

But the actress didn't face any problems throughout the making of "London Dreams".

"It is nothing less than a case study of its own. I can slice and dice a dozen-odd instances when it was proved time and again that Salman was nothing like he was being made out to be.

"I have absolutely no clue how negative stories about him keep emerging out of nowhere. As I look at them today, I believe these are all someone's cooked up imaginations, " said Asin.

Other than the fact that Salman contributed to the scheduled completion of the film, he too didn't allow his personal problems to come in the way of "London Dreams".

"Let me begin with the misconception of Salman being not punctual. Our first schedule took place abroad and it was wrapped up many days in advance. This means that it was a disciplined shoot and everyone including Salman was punctual. There was absolutely no tardiness on his part and he was always on time, " she said.

She also narrated the incident when Salman's dog died.

"Everyone knows that Salman is so close to his dog. Even when his dog died, he didn't call to cancel the shoot for that day. Instead, he turned up for the shoot in Karjat. It would have been even more difficult since he had to shoot for a happy and rejoicing song, " Asin said.

Even in front of the camera, she didn't face any issues working with Salman. Just like Aamir, Salman too just went ahead with his part and didn't interfere in the way Asin wanted to approach her scenes.

"Whether it was Aamir in 'Ghajini' or Salman in 'London Dreams', I didn't have to make any changes to adapt to their working style. They made me feel really comfortable. I was free to do things the way I wanted to because Aamir is very chilled out and he goes about his own job without interfering.

"Same is true with Salman. He doesn't come to you and tell you how you should be approaching your character. That is why it was so cool working in 'London Dreams'. I am still surprised at why people have negative things to say about Salman, " Asin said.

Releasing Oct 30, "London Dreams" is about a band comprising Salman, Ajay Devgan, Asin, Rannvijay Singh and Adithya Roy Kapoor. Asin plays the role of a dancer in the film.

Two kisses and a steamy song: Soha sheds all inhibitions

Soha Ali Khan is finally coming out of the shell and recent pictures from Tum Mile are ample proof of that.

After locking lips with Emraan Hashmi for the film, the duo has now shot a steamy music video at at a Yari Road bungalow which will be used for the promotion of the movie.

While talking to a tabloid director Kunal Deshmukh reveals, "When I told Soha about the music video, her initial reaction was: 'What? You are selling sex!' She has this asexual tag to her.

It is like Soha is not a sexy actress. But she has a great body and her 'no kiss, no this and no that' persona on screen is finally breaking through her head. She is now shedding all her inhibitions."

Earlier, Kunal wanted to direct it himself but felt that it looked too made-up. That’s why; he asked Emraan and Soha to direct it themselves. He wanted the song to have an amateur feel.

So, the two of them were handed video cameras and asked to shoot each other. Kunal is satisfied with the way the video has come out. Emraan and Soha enjoyed the experience as they felt they weren’t under any pressure.

It is learnt that, Soha was intially not comfortable doing steamy scenes with Emraan but finally, on Deshmukh's insistence, she understood the need of the script and agreed to do it.

“Well, at the beginning, I was a little reluctant and didn’t want to go ahead with the second kiss because the script demanded just one as was told to me.

But when Kunal explained the seriousness of the requirement for another kiss in the song, saying it would convey an entirely different mood, I agreed to do it. But it’s a sweet, tame kiss and shot in good taste. The song is itself so beautiful that the kiss just adds a little more to it. After watching the song, I really loved it and understood how important the scene was,” says Soha.

Adds Emraan, “I don’t think that there is any issue at all. Even I was told that there is just one kissing scene in the film, but when the second kiss scene piled on from the director’s point of view, the question was natural. So, I think Soha was correct in her reluctance. But she did understand the need of the scene and we did it comfortably.”

Katrina Kaif is more happy with Ranbir Kapoor.

Though Katrina Kaif has worked with the biggies of Bollywood, she is pretty cool and doesn't get carried away by it. In all her earlier assignments, she has mostly worked with the seasoned artistes, but now in Rajkumar Santoshi's forthcoming comedy AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI Katrina Kaif, for the first time, will be seen sharing screen space with the actor of her age - Ranbir Kapoor.

It seems that Katrina Kaif is more happy to have worked with Ranbir Kapoor and also finds it bit relaxing. Smiles and says the pretty damsel, ''Till date whenever I reported on the sets of any of my films, I was accustomed to saying good morning sir! Thank God! While working in AJAB PREM I never had to do anything like that. Jokes apart, when you work with the people of same age-group, you automatically get comfortable. Ranbir Kapoor is a chilled out guy, never takes himself seriously and doesn't have any ego problems. So it was very easy and natural to get along with him.''

Director Rajkumar Santoshi is quite secretive, rather diplomatic about his actors' real and reel relationship. He lately Director Rajkumar Santoshi proved it when asked about the on and off screen chemistry of Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif . Santoshi added, ''Well, I can't really go about revealing much about their chemistry, both on and off-screen when they are around. However, if this question is put to me in isolation, I have no qualms to answer the same.''

Shahid Kapoor & Amrita Rao might go naked for PETA

Bollywood celebrities such as Shahid Kapoor ,Amrita Rao, John Abraham and Sonu Nigam have said that they are interested in getting involved with PETA for the welfare rights of animals. Other stars, also interested, are Esha Deol, Upen Deol, Yana Gupta and Raveena Tandon. All these bollywood celebrities could be seen in poster campaigns for the charity in the full nude.

Shahid Kapoor was chosen because he was voted the sexiest vegetarian and Amrita Rao is a sexy girl-next-door who promotes vegetarianism. What’s more is that they look good together. He adds that Amrita has already tried the sexy look in Shortkut but she failed. Amrita will wear hot pants and a tube top in the advert. She wants to give it (her sexy avatar) another (vegetarian) shot and the campaign will get people talking about her and she does need some publicity. Shahid Kapoor will flaunt his chiselled six-pack-abs and it will be his sexiest look since ‘the running with the horses sequence’ in Kaminey.

A PETA spokesperson has said that these pictures might not be acceptable in India but might work overseas, and there is no reason why stars such as John and Sonu cannot be seen going without clothes for the overseas Indian.

The campaign will be shot next month. Shahid Kapoor is currently in the US and was unavailable for comment while Amrita Rao said that she was looking forward to the campaign which will spread the message of how sexy vegetarianism is.

Lara Dutta's sexy fun catapult her into the sexilicious brigade of Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra

Lara Dutta said, “Having a good body gives you a lot of confidence to carry off any look with the right attitude. But the emphasis is always on being and feeling fit. That’s sexy and yes, sexy is fun!” about her hot beach look in the movie, that promises to catapult her into the league of B-town’s sexilicious brigade of Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra on screen.

Lara Dutta’s living out of her suitcase these days. Shooting back-to-back for one film after another, the past few months have seen the Bollywood stunner traverse the globe from one end to the other, right from the Bahamas to Cambodia, and now to London. “I have rested enough,” says the actress, referring to the slight lull in her career graph last year, post a rocking 2007. “But now, I’m just looking forward to work and some more work.”

Having taken her de-glam look to quite an extreme in Billu earlier this year, the actress will now be seen taking her glam avatar to sizzling heights as she puts her best bikini bod forward in Anthony D’Souza’s Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar and Zayed Khan-starrer Blue. Produced by Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd, the film that releases on October 16 required the actress to be at her sexilicious best. Though Lara reveals that she has no hang-ups about showing off her fab toned figure in a two-piece, she does admit that there’s a “lot of hard working out involved in getting into a bikini on screen”.

The ‘water-babe’ also reveals that she’s as excited about this underwater action thriller, as she is about the other two comedies lined up soon after – Housefull and Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai. But, having performed some daredevil stunts for Blue, is she gearing up for some more action-oriented films now? “Oh yes. I am really dying to play a superhero. That’s very high on my agenda,” she laughs. “I would love to at least have one super-power – either the flying bit or the invisibility one. That’s always been my childhood dream.” And if she could turn invisible for a day? “I’d sure like to find out who’s behind spreading all the false rumours,” she laughs, referring to reports of her being upset about co-star Katrina Kaif ’s role being increased, and being overshadowed by international pop-queen Kylie Minogue in Blue. “All of us actors are very secure in our own space. So, where’s the question about insecurity? That’s way too juvenile,” she says, rubbishing the rumours. Not the one to mince words – whether it’s talk about her professional life or personal – the actress is as receptive of criticism as she is of appreciation on the career front. But she does put her defensive foot down when it comes to “the constant imaginative speculation” about her love-life. Having sent out a clear signal that any talk bordering on her relationship is akin to treading on thin ice, we cautiously ask what’s high on almost everyone’s mind – is Bollytown’s sexy lady single? “Well, all that I can say is that I do not believe in frivolous affairs and hope to be in a steady relationship some day. Having said that, I am also not the type to go and shout from rooftops if I do find true love. My private life is not for public consumption and I prefer it that way,” she signs off.

Soha ali khan and Emraan Hashmi selling SEX for Tum mile?

Soha Ali Khan has now shot for a steamy music video after doing two liplocks with Emraan Hashmi in Tum Mile.

"When I told Soha about the music video, her initial reaction was: 'What? You are selling sex!' She has this asexual tag to her. It is like Soha is not a sexy actress. But she has a great body and her 'no kiss, no this and no that' persona on screen is finally breaking through her head. She is now shedding all her inhibitions.", says director Kunal Deshmukh.

It is learnt that Saif Ali Khan's sister was apprehensive about doing the sensual video. "But I did not want the usual backdrop dancers in it with the actors," explains Kunal. "She and her co-star Emraan Hashmi, who plays an artist, essay a live-in couple. It gelled with the video's concept about moments spent at his art studio."

Pritam, who has scored the music for the Vishesh Productions project has Kay Kay singing the Dil Ibadat track for the video. "It has been specially shot for the promotions of Tum Mile. Right now, I have not decided whether I will include it in the end credits. I will take a call on it more closer to the film's release in November," points out Deshmukh.

What’s new in Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt’s BLUE

Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt BLUE has firsts to its credit for its underwater has been a theme that is touched by the world of Hollywood on a regular basis, the Indian cinema has turned to it after a long- long time with BLUE. BLUE is the first full length feature film where the underwater forms an interesting backdrop for development of plot of the film.

Incidentally BLUE has other firsts to its credit, including a female star in the form of Lara Dutta also vying shoulders with her male peers underwater. Besides, BLUE is also the first film whose music has also been released on pen drives and micro scan discs, keeping in tune with the current penchant of the audience to listen to music through these days.

Also another first for BLUE is that its advance booking has been opened more than 10 days before the film is to be released and it would be interesting to observe whether this initiative ensures full house for a longer period.

While the fascinating frontiers of It indeed is one of the intriguing phenomenons of the Indian cinema that though India is blessed with one of the most beautiful and enchanting geographical expanses, they seldom are used as a theme to build up a story.

Kareena Kapoor glamorous less in hindi version of Stepmom!

Kareena Kapoor is shedding her glam image for the Hindi version of Stepmom after doing glamorous roles in films like Kambakkht Ishq.

Kareena Kapoor has been quietly attending acting workshops with the film’s director, Siddharth Malhotra. “The last time I rehearsed for a part was for Vishal Bharadwaj’s Omkara. But that was an unconventional film and I had to get into a milieu and character of which I knew nothing about. But Stepmom is urban and very contemporary. I play a very normal metro-centric working girl,” she says.

Malhotra’s film is inspired by director Chris Columbus’s hit drama Stepmom, a tale of two women – divorced Susan Sarandon and the new woman (Julia Roberts) in her ex-husband’s life – and the problems they face to find a common ground of understanding. And to attend the workshops, Kareena has been stealing time from the rehearsals of a song she began shooting with Aamir Khan for 3 Idiots. Through the workshops, Kareena Kapoor, who plays Julia’s role, is discovering how difficult it is to play a normal girl. “I walk, talk, dress like an ordinary working girl. I’ll be using no make-up,” she says. Manish Malhotra, too, is trying to bring down Kareena’s glamour quotient in this movie to make her look like an ordinary working woman. “I couldn’t cut my hair as planned because of continuity clashes. But I’m going for a new hairstyle,” said Kareena.

Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan had been in the HDIL Couture Week

Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan had been anxiously wating for the finale to showcase their lines. In a constant show of one-upmanship, this round goes to Shah Rukh Khan. At the glam event, SRK will be in the limelight, while Salman Khan has to be content with showcasing his collection on Oct 13.

At any couture week, the grand finale has the most prestige and it’s no wonder that both Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan had been eyeing the slot. While Shah Rukh Khan is walking with his wife Gauri Khan for the launch of Karan Johar’s clothesline, Salman Khan will walk to display his charity clothesline, Being Human.

It is surprising that Salman Khan could not make it to the grand finale despite having many aces up his sleeve: the biggest stars Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Akshay Kumar will be walking with him on the ramp. Not so long ago, there was a buzz that Salman Khan had edged out Shah Rukh for the grand finale. A source says, “Both Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan were keen to do the grand finale. A grand finale in a fashion event is always very special.”

More interesting is that Shah Rukh Khan managed to elbow out Salman Khan despite the fact that Salman’s endorsement manager and the couture week event organiser is the same person, Reshma Shetty.

Confirming that Shah Rukh Khan will walk the grand finale, Reshma maintained, “Salman Khan did not want the grand finale. He is walking for charity. His show is not the couture show per se. He and the other actors with him will walk the ramp on Oct 13. We had blocked the dates of every star walking in the event two months ago. Salman Khan won’t even be here in Mumbai on the day of the grand finale.

Salman & Ajay after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

Both Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn have their individual movie releases in the coming weeks but Vipul Shah's magnum opus London Dreams will see the two stars reuniting on the big screen after a decade!

Last seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's smash hit Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1999, Ajay and Salman never got cast together till London Dreams, in which they play music aficionados in a London-based rock band.

Clarifies Vipul, "I never cast them because I wanted to repeat the Hum Dil... magic. In fact it didn't even occur to me that the two hadn't been together in a film since. I wanted Ajay for his intensity and Salman for his madness and after I cast them someone pointed out the casting coup of sorts! In fact, not many know that Salman and Ajay are great friends in real life and have immense respect for each other. They aren't very overt about it but they share amazing vibes and that will be visible on screen in London Dreams."

Ranbir lip-locked with Shazahn

Pazhassi Raja songs

Galatta.com exclusively presents the audio of director Hariharan's Malayalam starrer Pazhassi Raja, being made by Gokulam Gopalan under the banner of Gokulam Films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

The audio of this historical film was launched at the Gokulam Park auditorium in Kochi recently. Mammootty released the audio and handed over the first CD to Tamil actor Sarathkumar. Ilayaraja is the music director.

Expected to grace screens across the country on October 9 or during Deepavali weekend (October 16), Pazhassi Raja was censored with a U/A certificate recently. Scripted by M.T. Ashutosh insisted on getting different 'hair bounce' for each Priyanka

By now it is common knowledge that Priyanka Chopra plays 12 roles in Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee, and that each one has been styled differently.

But the attention that Ashutosh Gowariker has paid to the hair styling for each of the 12 Priyankas takes our breath away.

Explains the diligent director: "You can tell a girl's personality not only by her clothes and hair, but also by the way the hair bounces."

A different bounce had to be created by hair stylist Asha Hariharan for every Priyanka. Priyanka has assumed a different skin tone, complexion and playback voices, each suited to the individual character in terms of personality and body/ spoken language.

Confirming this, Ashutosh Gowariker says, "I knew Priyanka could pull off all 12 parts. I've seen how nuanced her performances are right from the time she made her debut in The Hero. When we decided to have the same actress playing all 12 parts, we decided to give every character a totally different personally in terms of dress, skin tone and even hair style."

Hair stylist Asha Hariharan was brought in to do Priyanka Chopra's hair for the 12 characters. Explains Ashutosh, "While Neeta Lulla has done all of Priyanka's clothes for the 12 characters, Asha Hariharan was brought in because I didn't only want only a different hair cut or style for all the 12 Priyankas. I also wanted a different fall and bounce for every girl's hair. For that, I needed an expert beyond the expertise offered by the Bollywood names."

Rajesh Patil was roped in to do Priyanka's 12 skin tones. "They're very subtle differences. But nonetheless the skin shades determine a major part of every girl's personality."

Priyanka being dusky in complexion had a particularly tough time playing the more gora avtars.

As for her voices, Ashutosh sifted through innumerable voices with composer Sohail Sen before selecting the 11 voices (the 12th girl doesn't sing). "It wasn't like an audition. But yes, my music director Sohail Sen and I went through the voices to select the ones that suited Priyanka's every avatar."

Adds Ashutosh, "If I made the film 20 years ago, Lataji would sung for all the 12 Priyankas and she would've made sure each avatar had a distinct personality."

Kamal Haasan on home ground

It was virtually a family function for World Star Kamal Haasan at the audio launch function of Unnaipol Oruvan at Sathyam Cinemas recently. In his home production, his elder daughter Shruthi has composed the music and his second daughter Akshara has choreographed a song.

Kamal's joy knew no bounds when two of his mentors – mega producer AVM Saravanan and epic director K. Balachander – came on stage to shower their blessings.

Not agreeing with the media view that the industry has hit a rough patch, Kamal said the need is to produce quality movies in sync with prevalent technology. On Unnaipol Oruvan, Kamal said the movie is all about an individual who lets out his fury at the system or the lack of it prevalent in our society

“There is no preaching but simply facing matter threadbare. The audience is intelligent enough to understand matters presented in a straight way. The changes from the original were inevitable as the magnitude of the problems varies from one state to another,” Kamal said.

Kamal to truly pleased when a distributor said that Shruthi's music is of top quality. "I think the decision to send Shruthi abroad to learn the nuances of music has paid off,” smiled the proud father.

When the topic veered to his next film, Kamal said a period film directed by Mysskin is very much on the cards. But before that will come his directorial venture with a prominent role earmarked for Balachander. Kamal freely admitted his gratitude to KB in his journey stretching to 50 years.

On Akshara's entry into films, Kamal said as a father he has a duty to guide but the children have the freedom to choose their professions.

On the advent of digital cinema, Kamal saw it as a positive sign for the growth of the industry. “Why do you have to press the panic button when making a movie gets so simplified?” asked Kamal.

I want to keep singing: Lata Mangeshkar

India’s melody queen Lata Mangeshkar wants to keep singing for the rest of her life, provided that she is offered meaningful songs.

During an audio launch in Mumbai, the legendary singer-actress, who turned 80 on Monday, said: "I want to continue singing for the rest of my life. I’m open to all kinds of songs, but the only thing I look for is the lyrics. The lyrics have to be meaningful. I would like the producers and the directors to approach me with soulful and meaningful tracks."

When asked about her opinion on the number of TV reality shows today, Lata said that more than singing, the focus is on performance. "Reality shows these days are all about singing, dancing, performing and latest fashion. New singing stars have potential but they concentrate more on overall performance rather than singing itself, which is a total contradiction."

"Singing is a divine form of art and blending it with other art forms takes away the very soul of music. So it’s better if reality shows concentrate purely on the talent of singing and music," she maintained.

Lata Mangeshkar has sung more than 30,000 songs in over 20 Indian languages including all kind of songs, from light classical music to film songs, from ghazals to bhajans and pop. Having worked with almost all top music composers and singers in India, Lata has also featured in the Guinness Book of Records from 1974 to 1991 for having made the most recordings in the world.

We already know that Malayalam super star Mohanlal has recently dubbed for the introduction as a prologue for the magnum opus Pazhassi Raja, being made in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. According to sources, it will be Mohanlal who would introduce the importance of king Pazhassi Raja in the Indian freedom struggle to the audiences.

According to latest reports, Kamal Haasan has dubbed the same prologue in Tamil and Shahrukh Khan has dubbed for it in Hindi. The dialogues were translated in Tamil by famous Tamil writer Jayamohan.

The audio of the film, being directed by Hariharan, was recently launched at the Gokulam Park auditorium in Kochi. Mammootty released the audio and handed over the first CD to Tamil actor Sarathkumar.

Produced by Gokulam Gopalan under the banner of Gokulam Films, Pazhassi Raja will be released on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti). It was censored with a U/A certificate recently by Thiruvananthapuram Regional Censors on August 31.

A momentous 2009 for Lara

Not many are aware that Lara Dutta wasn't keen on acting in BLUE. "Akshay Kumar had recommended my name to the producers. The moment I got to know of it, I called Akshay and told him that I wouldn't be able to accept the assignment. He knew the reason behind my decision," Lara tells me.

The 'reason' is, Lara didn't know how to swim, while major portions of BLUE were to be filmed in the ocean and swimming, therefore, was mandatory. "Not many people are aware that I had almost drowned while shooting for ANDAAZ. Akshay had rescued me," Lara enlightens me, "When I reminded Akshay I couldn't swim, he told me to forget my phobias and learn swimming pronto. Today, I feel BLUE has not merely made me overcome my phobias, but has also taught me something that would stay with me for the rest of my life."

Lara has had an eventful 2009 so far. First, the deglam look in BILLU. Then, a hardcore comic fare in DO KNOT DISTURB. Now BLUE. "It's been an interesting year. I had fun on the sets of DO KNOT DISTURB. Watching Govinda and Ritesh in comic scenes is a treat indeed and if you've to share screen space with them, it's great. You couldn't have asked for more," Lara says. The praises have been flowing in and Lara, obviously, is feeling on top of the world.

But BLUE is one film that Lara looks forward to with bated breath. "BLUE is a first-of-its-kind film on Hindi screen. You haven't watched something like this before. You can only draw parallels with international films. I am sure, this film will make a huge impact not just in India, but also internationally," Lara feels strongly.

"Jermaine Jackson and I are doing two songs together" - Adnan Sami

On Friday afternoon when the deceased legend Michael Jackson's brother Jermaine arrived to collaborate with Adnan Sami, there was a sense of disbelief in the city. Jermaine arrived with his wife Halima. They both checked into the Taj but spent the entire evening at Adnan's place discussing music, food, social concerns and Michael Jackson (MJ).

"It's been an exhausting but amazing time since Jermaine arrived," chuckles Adnan after an exhilarating session with Jermaine at the newly-revamped T-Series recording studio. "That's why I didn't make any announcements about Jermaine's arrival. I didn't want to sound premature in my excitement since Jermaine had visa issues and his arrival in Mumbai was uncertain till the last minute."

Adnan and Jermaine have got together to record a tribute to Mumbai City. "It will be part of an album we've been working on for two years long before Michael Jackson's sudden death. Jermaine loves India and Mumbai. I could've easily joined him in Los Angeles to record the song. But Jermaine insisted on coming down."

Adnan intends to make the third of the Jackson siblings familiar with the sights and sounds of Mumbai and India. "After the recording is over, we're going to Chowpatty and all the other hot spots of Mumbai. Jermaine loves Indian food. But he doesn't want to have the 5-star stuff. He wants to taste the pao-bhaji, paani-puri, bhelpuri, batata-vada and all the street-slurps."

A visit to the Taj Mahal is also on the anvil. "We'll visit the Taj and Fatehpur Sikri where as you know, Tansen once sang. I'd have loved him to stay in my house. But I thought a hotel would be more comfortable for Jermaine and Halima. I'm bowled over by his humility and his hunger to learn and know about Indian culture. His down-to-earth nature reminds me of Mr. Bachchan."

Adnan plans a very exclusive sit-in dinner party in Jermaine's honour at his home on October 7.

Jermaine also heard Azaan's music and loved it. The Jermaine-Adnan album will be marketed in India by T-Series and internationally on Jermaine's label. "T-Series re-revamped their entire studio and equipment for Jermaine's recording," says Adnan. "We're doing two songs together, one of them a tribute to Mumbai and its unstoppable energy"

Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi team up again for an action film

It's goodbye to Sanjay Dutt for now, hello Sunny Deol in Rajkumar Santoshi's life.

Santoshi has put the expensive historical on the Partition, Jis Lahore Nahin Dekhia Woh Jamia Hi Nahin with Sanjay Dutt in the lead, on indefinite hold. Instead Santoshi is going right ahead with his film with Sunny Deol. Deol and Santoshi have been locked in earnest discussion over the past few weeks. They want to make sure the film will be the perfect comeback vehicle for the exiled star.

Says Santoshi, "I'd love to work with Sanjay Dutt. But the historical requires a whole lot more research and a huge budget which we can't afford at this time. I'm currently making a film with Sunny Deol written by me and Sridhar Raghavan to be produced by me. In fact, Sunny just left my office," Santoshi said on Tuesday afternoon.

The estranged hit jodi of Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi is coming together again after 13 years. They last worked together in Ghatak.

Confirming this development at a time when Sunny's career has hit the lowest ebb, Santoshi says, "Yes, Sunny and I are working together after so many years. He still packs in the same punch."

Ask Santoshi about the rough patch that Sunny's career is going through, and the director jumps to his old favourite's defence. "It's unfortunate that some of Sunny's recent films haven't worked. That doesn't mean Sunny didn't work. He's still our best action hero. And we'll prove it. We gave a new definition to action cinema in Ghayal. Again we hope to do the kind of action that audiences haven't seen before. Sunny doesn't need to flash six packs to be an action hero. One look from him is enough to defeat an army of enemies."
