Box office warms up to 'Wake Up Sid'

Box office is a gamble, particularly for an unconventional movie like Wake Up Sid. But by giving the flick a different treatment like John Hughes’ films showing today’s youth in a new light, debutant director Ayan Mukherjee has been successful in making an appealing movie which has instantly clicked with the audience.

‘Wake Up Sid’ grossed Rs 10.50 crore approx over its first weekend. The movie, produced by Karan Johar and starring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma, is doing decently well at the box office despite it being described as a film for multiplexes only. The collections were best on Friday, benefitted by the holiday, and on Sunday; there was a drop in collections on Saturday.

The collections of the other release of the week, Do Knot Disturb, were disturbing, something knot expected from a David Dhawan film; not-so-good reviews resulted in not-so-good response from the audience. “The movie had only a two-day run with close to 75 percent despite 16 shows,” Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas at Noida, told IANS.

If ‘Do Knot Disturb’ is unable to pull crowds, ‘Wake Up Sid’ is set to have a good run at multiplexes in the coming days. The film can emerge a winner on the strength of metro multiplex business. It is expected to collect around Rs 16-17 crore approx.

That calls for celebration! Well Done Sid.
