After making waves with her red evening gown and flaunting her curves at the swimsuit round at the Miss Universe pageant in Bahamas, Ekta did pretty well in the interview with the judges as well. While you wait for 23 August to watch the glam event, we re-introduce to you the ladies who have made a mark at pageant earlier.
It was 1994, a glorious year for India, when Sushmita Sen stood first at pageant and became the first Miss Universe from India. At Miss Universe, Sushmita ranked third overall in the preliminaries but the story changed in the following rounds. The 18-year-old model from New Delhi brought home over 150 000 USD in cash and prizes. Sushmita’s rival in the Miss India pageant, Aishwarya Rai, won the Miss World title.
Lara Dutta was crowned Miss Universe in the year 2000. In 2000, the pageant was held in Cyprus and Lara was ranked high on the favorite list. She completely impressed the judges in the interview round and scored the maximum 9.99 marks! Since then, none of the Indian beauties has brought home the crown, but there have been close misses.
That year was pretty lucky for India as Priyanka Chopra and Dia Mirza also won their respective Miss World and Miss Asia Pacific crowns, making it a rare record.
Prior to that, Madhu Sapre who represented India at the Miss Universe pageant in 1992 and was announced the second runner up. At that time, many people said that her answer in the final round was reponsible for her losing the title. Madhu was asked, "What is the first thing you would do if you were the head of your country?"
She replied, "I think the first thing I'll do is, I'll open up a big, biggest sports track and field ground in India because I think we are lacking that and that's the first thing I'll do!” Madhu doesn’t regret it at all and says that she was supposed to be truthful and said whatever her heart told her to.
Namrata Shirodkar, a renowned model and Bollywood actress now, made it among the top six contestants at Miss Universe 1993.
The really stunning Manpreet Brar became the first runner-up at Miss Universe 1995, behind Miss USA Chelsi Smith.
From 1996-1999 all the Indian beauties made it to the top 10 but couldn’t qualify for the further rounds. It includes Sandhya Chib, late Nafisa Joseph, Lymaraina D'Souza and Gul Panag who has moved to Bollywood now. It was only in 2000 that Lara Dutta won the title and broke the jinx.
Miss India 2001 Celina Jaitley made it to the top five in Miss Universe pageant but failed to make it to the final three. She is going great guns in the Hindi film industry these days. Neha Dhupia and Tanushree Dutta, Celina’s colleagues in Bollywood, were crowned Miss India in the year 2002 and 2004 respectively. Both of them also made it to the top 10 at the beauty contest.
Miss India 2006 Neha Kapur made it to the top 20 but was eliminated in the second round. Similarly, Puja Gupta also finished ninth in Miss Universe 2007.
It was in 2003 that India's Nikita Anand failed to make a place in top contenders, breaking the 11-year Indian streak of placing in the Top 10 from 1992 to 2002. Amrita Thapar in 2005 and Simran Kaur Mundi in 2008 were also eliminated quite early from the pageant.
Ekat’s friends and family are praying for her success and are hoping that she will win the crown. We also wish to see her joining the list of Miss Universe winners and become an inspiration for millions.
