
Versatile actor Prakash Raj has reportedly bagged the National award for the best actor for his stunning performance in director Priyadarshan's offbeat film Kanchivaram (Tamil), a tragic tale of a pre-Independence Indian silk weavers in Kanchipuram.
According to sources, Kanchivaram has also won the National award for the best film. Official announcements are yet to come.
Kanchivaram unfolds against the backdrop of the first rumblings of labor unionism in South India. The film casts Prakashraj, Shreya Reddy, Shammu and Jayakumar in the lead. The film, using Tamil language and grammar of that period, was produced by Percept Picture Company and Gulshan Kumar.
The film was premiered at various international film festivals including Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and International Film Festival of India 2008.
